Different Types of Divination and How to Use Them

Sometimes life throws questions at you that Google or Chat GPT (🙄) just cannot answer. That’s where divination comes in. Divination is basically you having a conversation with Spirit, your higher self, or your guides to get clarity, direction, or just a little confirmation that you’re not losing it.

When I first started, I thought divination meant tarot cards only. But the truth is, there are so many ways to receive messages. Some are simple, some are a little more involved, but all of them work if you bring intention and consistency. Let’s walk through a few types of divination and how you can actually use them in your own practice.

Tarot and Oracle Cards

Probably the most popular. Tarot uses 78 cards with structured meanings, while oracle decks are more free-flowing and intuitive. Using this method, I would advise against being biased. If spirit is trying to send you a message, take heed to it. Trust me, spirit will let you know if they even want to answer your question or not LOL.

How to use:

  • Shuffle with your question in mind.

  • Pull a card or spread and pay attention to the images and your gut reaction.

  • Journaling after each reading helps track patterns.

My tip: Don’t overthink it. The first message that comes to you is usually the right one.

Pendulums

A pendulum is usually a crystal or weighted object on a chain that swings to answer yes/no questions.

How to use:

  • Hold it steady. Ask to be shown “yes” and “no.”

  • Ask clear, direct questions.

  • Don’t use it if your energy is all over the place, pendulums pick up on that.

My tip: Pendulums are like WiFi signals. If you’re distracted, the connection drops. Center yourself first.

Scrying

This is the art of gazing into something reflective like water, a mirror, or a crystal ball. The goal is to soften your vision and let images or symbols come through.

How to use:

  • Dim the lights and light a candle behind your scrying tool.

  • Relax your eyes and let impressions come naturally.

  • Write down what you see, even if it feels random at first.

My tip: Scrying takes patience. Don’t expect a full movie scene on the first try. Spirit speaks in flashes and symbols.

Bibliomancy

Messages from books. You ask a question, open a book at random, and let your eyes land on a line or phrase.

How to use:

  • Choose a spiritually aligned book (Bible, poetry, even your journal).

  • Ask your question.

  • Open and point.

My tip: Don’t dismiss it if the line feels random. Sit with it. Spirit speaks through synchronicity.

Astrology

Using your birth chart or transits to gain clarity. Astrology is like your cosmic blueprint, and divination through it helps you see the timing of things.

How to use:

  • Pull up your chart (tons of free sites exist).

  • Look at current transits and how they hit your planets.

  • Journal what patterns or themes show up.

My tip: Astrology isn’t about predicting doom. It’s about understanding energy patterns so you can move with the flow instead of against it.

Coin and Dice Divination

Sometimes the simplest tools are the most effective. Tossing coins or dice while holding a question can bring quick answers.

How to use:

  • Decide your system (ex: 2 heads = yes, 2 tails = no, mixed = maybe).

  • Toss while focused on your question.

  • Keep a log to notice patterns.

My tip: Spirit loves simplicity. Don’t sleep on basic tools.

Bone Throwing (Osteomancy)

This is one of the oldest forms of divination, rooted in several traditions. Practitioners cast bones, shells, stones, or other small objects onto a surface and interpret how they fall. Each piece carries a meaning, and together they create a story or message from Spirit.

How to use:

  • Create or be gifted a set of bones or curios (these can include shells, stones, charms, or actual bones depending on your path).

  • Shake them gently and cast them onto a cloth or flat surface.

  • Pay attention to how they fall, what pieces land together, and the directions they point.

My tip: This is not usually a beginner practice unless you feel Spirit clearly calling you to it. Bone throwing often requires initiation, mentorship, or deep study in the tradition it comes from. If you’re curious, approach with respect, learn from teachers who carry the lineage, and never try to mimic without guidance.

Final Thoughts

Divination isn’t about finding the “perfect” tool. It’s about finding the right one for you in the moment. Some people stick with tarot for life. Others mix it up depending on the question or season. The important thing is this: Spirit will always find a way to communicate with you. Your job is just to show up, ask with intention, and trust the answer (whether you like it or not).
